Two questions concerning the alarm...

On a 1986 70hp Evinrude VRO...

1: When you first turn the key is the alarm suppossed to chirp real quick letting you know that it is working?

2: What does it mean when the alarm is a constant beep and doesnt stop? In the manual it doesn't mention this... Today it happened and I started messing with things and tried again and it was fine?

Question #1 = Yes, that is a test to show that the horn is operational.

Question #2 = A constant beep indicates the engine is overheating.

1 - A steady constant beep = Overheating - The V/6 engines, possibly some others, have a fuel restriction warning which is also a steady constant beep.
2 - A beep every 20 or 40 seconds = oil level has dropped to 1/4 tank. (Late model engine = Every 40 seconds)
3 - A beep every other second = VRO failure, air leak in oil line, oil restriction, (anything that would result in a lack of oil being supplied to the engine).

NOTE - If the warning horn is the black plastic (overpriced) three wire type horn, the warning horn should beep once when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If it does not, it is either faulty or someone has disconnected it (a stupid move!). At any rate, if it does not beep which indicates that the horn is non functional, find out why and do not run the engine until the problem is corrected.

Thanks bud! I think it was a fuel restriction horn! I had actually just drained the gas tank. One of the things I did to solve the issue was I took off the has line and stuck my screw driver into that ball and primed it until gas came out. Then I put it back on and primed it once to get gas in the system and it must have worked

the 70hp as far as i know do not have a vacuum switch.
so its imposible that the alarm you hear is a fuel restriction.
it could be a short or a overheat situation..

A short really wouldnt suprise me... Re-doing the wire mess was next on my list anyhow I just wanted to do a compression check and make sure I wasnt wasting my time working on a boat with a screwed up engine!
