Hello everyone. I am new here this is my second post. I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri open bow I picked up for FREE with a trailer! It has a force 120 Ldrive in it. The motor is newer. When I got the boat the motor didnt run due to the crank breaking right at the flywheel. so they flywhel wasnt on but sitting there beside it. I put a new crank in it but cant get it to fire. Also the motor wont turn over with the spark plugs in it but if there out it turns like butter. The Battery is a new deep cell. I dont know the CCA off the top of my head but I know its enough. I was wondering if it was worth trying to save this combo or is it better to try to put a different type of motor in there? If so how would I go about doing that? I plan on using this boat for wakeboarding.

Thanks
Matt

Get a starting battery Trolling motor batteries are made to deliver low amps over a long time. Starting batteries pump out lotsa amps in a hurry. There are dual-purpose deep-cycles, but if yours doesn't have a CCA or MCA rating, it ain't one of them.

The other thing that comes to mind is the starter. It could have a bad armature. You can usually smell that, very smokey-smelling. It may also have two sets of brushes inside. If only one set is making contact, you get half-power.

There are no other types of motor that will fit, except the 90LD powerhead.

There is a reason it was free.
Unfortunately even the Force fans say run from an L drive as quickly as possible. And the other problem is the boat does not lend itself very well to conversion to different inboard or outboard power.
Of course any boat can be converted if you want to put the time and money into it.
Someone with more info will probably be along with more specific info.I think I would be looking to sell parts on eBay.There are a lot Bayliners out there and of course there is the 120 hp power head.

Well, you already sprung for the big bucks for a crank. In for a dime--in for a dollar! I would at least try to diagnose the problems to find out how much more dollars it needs. Might get lucky and only need simple repairs.
Also, remember that it needs oil mixed with the gas. A few people thought that because it was an io it didn't need oil mixed in and burned up the engine.
