1967 95hp. Removing it from my boat since the top piston decided to take a trip through the head. Got it lifted off the boat, all connections undone except getting the steering cable loose. Should the rod just slide out from the cylinder, tube, whatever u call it or is there something holding it between the 2 hydraulic pistons of the trim. Wish I knew the correct name to call it. ???? it feels like there is a spring or some kind of tension holding the rod. Do I need to loosen the steering wheel at all. I have a manual on disk 1965 thru 89 merc's and of course I can't find a direct answer to my ???? Thx in advance.

Re: steering cable removal

The cable is anchored by a big nut on the tilt tube. Remove that and the cable should slide out. Not the two that keep the tilt tube in place, but the one on the other side from where the steering ram sticks out.

as WBW said this is a johnny, but they work the same remove the nut, tube should slide out. could be corroded or rusted. and will have to be driven out and then probably replaced..the cable can be cut with a sawsall and a metal blade if it gets that far.

man I hate to ruin the cable. YOU REALLY THINK i NEED TO BEAT IT. I can turn the wheel and the port side pivot connect goes abt 1/8 inch inside the tilt tube. So now I need to beat it out. When I hit it it just pushes back from the steering wheel. All nuts r off of both sides. There's nothing inside the tube holding the rod. Just askin again b4 I destroy sumthin.

Guess what I need to figure out is what kind of steering I have, directional, rotary, teleflex. I have a 1967 95 hp merc and it sits on a 1976 reinell raider. Maybe that will help you guys help me out. I still can't get the steering cable thru the motor tilt. Help.
