This was a FREE boat / motor / trailer. I am stripping the boat down to see if I want to use the hull as a base for a budget fishing platform.

I will be selling the motor to hopefully fund the project, as it is a nice vintage find. It appears to be a 1956 30HP Johnson Javelin. I think it was the only year for the 30HP. I'm not sure if I will sell it as is, or repaint it and do a carb/water pump kit/tune up. Any opinions are encouraged.

My ideas so far are to base the design on a tiller style arrangement. There are many lakes, ponds, and reservoirs in my area that are electric motor only, and this would make a suitable craft. I will make sure it can also handle a 20 - 40HP gas if need be.

Having just bought my first boat last summer, I'm going into this with only the knowledge I've gleaned from this forum.

My next step is going to be clamping on the 55 lb. trolling motor and hitting the water. I want to test out the stability to plan out a casting deck, and see if there's any leakage. I also might plan on scrapping the whole idea if I have reason to.

I'm doing this more for experience than anything else, as I have bigger projects in mind this year.

Here are some pics of where I'm at so far:

i see a transon that has to be done, for sure. probably the floor. i would leave the top part of the deck alone, as it is a major part of the stability of the structure. as far as the engine, i'd keep it. as you said, clean it up, tune it up. it can be a great engine, no reason to buy new. parts at laingsoutboards.com.

Great website! I also have the original metal 6 gallon fuel tank with metal primer button. Looks like I could tune the motor up for around $100, plus painting. What would such a motor be worth then? I was planning on going tiller only with this.

Also, I was looking at the floor yesterday. It must be only 2 - 3 inches above the keel at the deepest point. A very low floor.

As most of you may allready know the color is closer to the darker red of the full starboard view. But what a motor! Not a bad price if you are really getting a like new 30 hp motor. And routine parts are still available.

Finally got it out on the water to test:

Actually go going about 2 miles per hour up the mighty Snake river . . . woohoo !!

Seems to handle well and be stable enough. I'm going to tear the deck off, then floor, then decide if I want to rebuild it. So far so good . . . .
