I have a 2003 90 hp yamaha and the steering has slowly become more and more stiff until it completly doesnt move. The steering shaft comes half way out the port side and will only slightly budge into the tilt tube when forced with a hammer. I have taken of the nut on the starbord side of the steering cable conection that attactes to the engine. And with this nut off i can turn the steering wheel and the cable will move in and out but the metal shaft on the other side doesnt move. I thought these were connected, I have looked for diagrams on the net but with no luck. I have sprayed heavy duty degreaser into the tilt tube where the cable goes into. alot of muck has come out. I assume all of the grease has caked up with some salt and siezed it up. does anyone know what to do. any diagrams. I would like to avoid taking the motor off, but i dont know if the cable is stuck in there or the transom wont allow me to remove it... Any help would help... hope this makes since....

Re: Yamaha 90hp Steering and tilt tube

Keep on beating it and oiling it until it gives-up. A bit of twisting also helps. It's the ram stuck in the tube, probably from corrosion. Once you get it out, clean everything up real well, grease it up good, then put it back together. You'll probably be good to go if the ram and tube aren't damaged. If you take the link out of the eye, put a bolt in there to keep it round from the beating.
