A lobbyist is anyone who is employed and receives payment, or who contracts for economic consideration, for the purpose of lobbying, or a person who is principally employed for governmental affairs by another person or governmental entity to lobby an agency on behalf that other person or governmental entity.

In short.....

Lobbyists are hired to stack the deck.

"Lobbyists" are a lot like lawyers. They are employed to promote the employer's interests.

Lawyers do it in court, lobbyists originally did it in the "lobby" of Congress.

Some big differences, though. Lawyers are tightly restricted in what they may do, and if they are caught violating laws or ethics they are banned from practicing or severely punished. Lobbyists face few restrictions of that sort. They are not licensed, not subject to a code of ethics and usually not monitored or supervised.

Because they are both "mouthpieces" for others' interests they both are viewed by many as dishonest, scheming prostitutes. Some people, of course, point out that elected government officials are also representing others' interests and deserve the same "scarlet letter".

So much for negativism.

There is a place and a need for them. Our system would be far less effective without the good ones who are, in my opinion, the majority .

I work closely with a lobbyist. He is also a lawyer. He is invaluable in reaching out to people who would not ordinarily give citizens the time of day. They provide research and perspective on a wide range of issues that elected officials may not have the time to properly understand.

A good lobbyist assists officials in creating good public policy. Those that don't lose access. And access is everything. If you don't like what lobbyists do, don't blame the lobbyist, it is the elected official selling you out in most cases.

Lobbiest: One link below, in the chain of corruption, of your elected politician. Since the majority of elected officials are out of touch with reallity, lobbiest inject influence on them into believing that this is how you (the voter) really feels about certain issues and they have the money to prove it.

Reconsidered.

Not worth the fallout.
