Hello, I just got a Sea King 5hp model gg18736b which I believe is a 1961. I had it running in idle the other night and noticed there was no water coming out the circulation discharge so I quickly turned it off. It was only running maybe one minute max. Because this is my first outboard, I didn't know if the water should be streeming out when in neutral or only when in gear. The day after I ran it I noticed there was some brown liquid oozing very slowly from the joint at the prop.

So, my questions are:
Should the motor spout water when in idling in neutral?
What is the brown liquid (l.u.oil?). and how do i stop it from leaking?

Also I notice there was a lot of smoke but my grandfathers old evinrude used to smoke bad the first run too, and I figured with 24:1 fuel mix there should be some smoke.

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Water should come out in a pretty good stream.Be sure the pump is under water at all times when running.
Sounds like lower unit lube is leaking.Smell it,if its exhaust residue it will have a gassy smell. If gear lube it will have a distinct gear oil smell.
You can also drain the gear case if it leaks there will usually be water present.Only remove the large flat head drain, vent screws. Not the smaller Phillips head screw.Water will usually turn the lube a creamy coffee color.Solution is to change the various seals and gaskets.Don't forget the shift rod seal and the drain a vent screw gaskets.
Smoke is pretty much normal even after running it a bit.

Thanks spike,
Sounds like I am going to have to install a new impeller, which will be an excellent time to check all the seals in the lower unit.

Right,Do you know your motor was built by the Gale devision of omc and uses many of the similar E/J parts?

Look for an oval port on the side of your midsection covered by a plate with two screws. Hopefully it has one. That's where you would disconnect the shift rod when removing the gearcase. If you don't have one, you will need to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod. It's not hard, but you'll need a new base gasket for the powerhead.

Spike:
I have the Inertec manual for old small motors and it says it is the equvalent to a gale model 5d18b. That manual is great, I would be lost without it.

Willy:
thanks for the advice. I cant recall off the top of my head if it has the port your talking about, but I want to say no. I will check tonight. Any tips on where to find a base gasket, and other gaskets for this thing?

Thanks for the help guys,
-Andy
