Someone gave us an old abandoned boat with a 35hp johnson sea king on it. We are wondering how to go about seeing if it will start and run. Its model number is
RDE-19 c and serial # is 1739155. We noticed it said add hypoid oil in the shaft. What is that? Also the gas line looks strange with a vacuum hose or something with the plug can someone help us figure this out. We are naive about old motors I guess. Please bear with us. Thanks in advance.

1958, I believe that 's the first Super Quiet SeaHorse (not king). I'm assuming that's the vac hose attached to a vacuum switch which tames down the RPMs when you suddenly bring the throttle back to idle. They can run-on uncontrollably without it. Gearlube goes in the gearcase. You fill from the bottom drain hole on the bottom in front of the fin, until it flows out the vent hole on the side near the antiventilation plate.

Public libraries carry outboard service manuals. Check one out and photocopy pertinent pages for future reference.
