Is there an engine on that boat?
Is it a Mercury or Mariner?
Is it an outboard?
Does it have a model number?
What sort of Mercury or Mariner Outboard has an intake/exhaust "manny"?

Re: Intake/Exhaust manny.. advice

This is very likely an I/O and since the manifolds are water cooled there are passages for exhaust as well as water. If its cracked externally, it is probably cracked internally as well. Welding the outside will do not good as water will tend to migrate through any internal cracks, get into the engine, hydro lock it, cause rusting and ruin it. Replace the manifold and make sure you winterize it next winter provided temps in your area do get below freezing. As for factory decals you have two choices -- the factory or E-bay. You might get lucky at an older Forester Dealer.

thanks alot man,..

yes its a 1985 mercruiser 3.0 4 cycl. the crack is on the very bottom... like a inch from then bottom drain plug,. which is the one i missed during the winterizeing. process,, it was cold and i had to get back to college.. anyway .. the crack is in the water passage and not between the two.. so i dont think that ill have the hydro lock problem lol... i hope... let me know thanks

And you are willing to take that chance? Can't afford a manifold now but you can afford a new engine later? Don't mean to be a smart a$$ but this is reality. Welding cast iron is a job for a qualified welder.

smart a$$ stuff is what i need.... i need the truth hahah so keep it coming i have to learn some how.!!! :)

i am currently at Alfred state college.. i brought the manifold to the 4th year welding shop..... the professor him self .. who has been welding for over 30 years professionally... Braised it... they said... so ya think ill be ok ? if not... i guess ill punk up and find a manifold and buy a new one...... do you think " braising" it is the best way /??

Let me know
Thanks again

Re: Intake/Exhaust manny.. advice

At this point you should cap off the Water side of the manifold,+ Pressure Test it with Air to see if it's Leaking into the Gas/ Exhaust side.....

Brazing is Fine,...... Nickle was another possibility...... It's All about the Heat Control......
If your Instructor got it Right,...... It shouldn't Leak under Pressure........

Epoxy probably would have been Just as Good, or Better.......

Btw,...........
do you think " braising" it is the best way

That's what is done to Food,........ Not Metals...............d:) :}

well you cant see inside :) it will need to be blocked were the exaust ellbow bolts on and pressure tested with at least 15 PSI of water

If any water drips into the intake and exaust passages you have a bigger problem if NOT you are aware of the risk your takeing and its your call

It pushed IN just as HARD as it pushed OUT :)

Re: Intake/Exhaust manny.. advice

what would be the best way to pressure check it?? not sure how to go about that really ! ?

is there alot of pressure in the water side??

cuzz the crack is right around the bottom drain plug..

i just got it back from the shop class.. and the instructor said he like V'ed it and brazed it .. so i hope its ok now!

The slots in the picture are were the water exits the manifold you have to use a gasket and a metal or wood block good enough to stop the flow

Then you can put pressure into the water inlet and see or hear and leaks

A LOT of the internal areas like the slots are very narrow and easy to crack ,you have to pressure test it

Re: Intake/Exhaust manny.. advice

Block off the holes in the picture( a block of oak and a gasket would work if you cant make one out of metal ) and connect a garden hose with a guage to the inlet ?

I do a lot of hydro tests on tanks and find water a lot safer if things go wrong :)
