I just bought a 1988 evinrude 120. It is a short shaft for an 18" transom and my boat has a 21" transom. How difficult (costly) is it to make this adjustment? I have seen extentions online....is this the ticket?

Rusty, A Short Shaft is for a 15" transom. If your model is E120ELCC, then it is a long shaft, which fits a 20" transom. If the model is E120EXCC, then it is for a 25" transom.

If you really have a 21" transom, the ELCC model should be correct. Other than that, it would be cheaper to get a economy JackPlate, then to get a new lowerunit.

as chris stated, your eng is probably correct,it is the short shaft if it is for 20 in transom, the older and some smaller hp engines have lengths for 15 inch. your 88 120 would be only 20 0r 25 inch shaft(except for modified racing engines)you want the cavitation plate to ride even or slightly above the bottom of the transom, there are adjusting holes on the engine, you might try using the second or third set of holes, try bolting .temporarily and n measure to see where your cavitation plate(its the larger plate on the lower unit above the prop)you want the water to pass from the bottom of the boat and sliding under that plate, but not mounted TOO high,

Your stock recreational motor is a 20" or 25" model. Those are not exact measurements, just references. A 20" transom is usually 20 3/4".

yup. you guys are right. I can't get anything by you!

I remeasured and the engine I have is perfect for my transom. I initially had measured the engine while 2 hours away from my boat (to buy it) and got it wrong. Fortunately it works because I THOUGHT I could extend it if it was too short and I have since found that that only applies to engines 35 hp and less. Wheww, close call!

thanks..8)

I have a buddy who has a 15" 120 V4 looper. Wanna buy it? No, it's not the SST100 mid section.
