i just got this motor it is a johnson 5.5 cd 17 seahorse i am haveing trouble makeing it run good it wont idle it will run in high speed in nutral but dies after about 2 minutes wont run in forward or reverse in high or low idle i rebult the carb and put new spark plugs and coils any help would be apreciated thanks

You should be working with a manual.You may find one at the library or here or on eBay.Points should be set at .020 when on the highest point of the cam.Plugs set at .030.
Check the spark.Should jump 1/4 inch and be blue and snappy.Does it run better if you choke it?Does it run better if you squeeze the primer bulb?Is the tank vent open and clear?Does the primer bulb collapse?
Disconnect the fuel line at the carb hold it in a can and carefully crank the motor.Fuel should come in strong steady pulses.

vent is open and clear runs worse when i choke it primer bulb is ok has no power in gear should i replace the fuel pump

when you rebuilt the carb, did you blow out all orifices with compressed air, reassemble with a new float, and rebuild kit? sounds like the float is stuck closed, running on gas forced into carb, and not refilling, running out of gas.

i found the problem the coils were bad its only running on one cylender thanks for all the help this site is great
