This is a 1999 Regal XR2 jetboat. This is a long one, so please bear with me!

I was out waxing my boat up and getting it ready to go to the marina yesterday, when I noticed a potentially serious problem. I pulled up the carpet in the storage compartment in the floor, where you can store skis etc. and noticed that water sat in there over the past winter. The whole fiberglass lining inside the compartment was cracked apart, probably from freezing so many times over the past 6 months. The wood is completely water-logged underneath the compartment from seeping through the cracks in the FG.

The compartment has holes that I'm guessing run throughout the boat as a single drainage track. From the holes in the cup holders to the storage compartment to the engine compartment comparment to the plug holes.

I just found out that my brother had it out last summer and backed it in with the plugs out. He then parked it and left the plugs in! I found standing water in the compartment last summer (he told me a wave came over the back of the boat). I dumped it, sopped up the water with towels, sprayed to kill any mold and had a fan on it for a week to dry it out. I thought that I got the water out, but didn't recognize the severity of the situation.

Now, back to present. Yesterday, after we found there was still water, we then tipped the boat as much as we could and there were gallons of water that poured out of the plug holes. Next, we pulled up as much of the cracked fiberglass in the compartment that we could to expose the wood. I then used a shopvac to suck out another gallon of water or so, and now have a powerful fan sitting in the compartment to dry it out.

I guess my question is: Does anyone know if the whole wood frame inside the hull would be separated from this compartment via it's own layer of fiberglass? Or, is it possible that the frame also is waterlogged? I don't even know where to start with this one and am not sure what kind of damage could have been done already. I'm guessing that if there is cracked fiberglass where I can see it, there might be more where I can't. I feel sick just thinking about it!

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I can also email 7.1 mp pictures if someone would like to see the compartment.

Thanks,

Seth

Seth, welcome to iboats.
Sounds like you have a nasty problem on your hands.
These questions would be better answered in the boat restoration forum where I will move this now.
Again, welcome to iboats.

Seth,

Welcome! Is there any way you can post the pictures here? Photobucket.com will host them for you to link to this website. Photos would be a HUGE help to all here.

I'm still VERY new at this but I would think you're on the right track trying to dry out the hull to start. However, I'm affraid you may end up cutting some floor to take a better look.

Don't cut anything on my behalf though. I'm sure someone will be along soon who is more experienced in this stuff shortly.

Best of luck!

Sure,

That is what I am afraid of. I am at work right now, but when I get home I will snap some shots and post them tonight.

Thanks Lowell,
Seth

You need to adjust the camera or resize the picture down to 640 X 480 with a photo editor

If you try and post a 7 MP picture it nobody will be able to view them :)

Okay,

That helps. I have Adobe CS2, so that won't be an issue. I'll post them tonight when I get home...

I just called the same boat shop that winterized the boat to have them come to my house and take a look at it. I am just waiting for a call back. Maybe he can give me an idea of where to start.

Seth, Damn man that's not good news for starting the season. Water inside and winter outside are not good choices for a happy boat. If you have foam, it's probably saturated and will not dry out with fans, etc. Do a core test on the foam if you can. Do a drill test on the stringers. Dont forget to reseal the holes. Go weight the boat and compare that weight to the original weight, less fuel, etc. N.A.D.A. has your boat at 2170lb. Let hope the dealer's experts bring good news.

Man, I feel for you! I'm 2/3 done replacing about half the floor in my 19' BR, but it's 20 yrs old and I new it needed the work when I bought it. It almost seems unfair to have such issues on a 1999 boat!

Withut pictures it is hard to know the water path in that boat. Is the gas tank under the floor behind the ski compatrment? If so, you may have caught a small break in that the water from the ski compartment my just run under/around the gas tank to the bilge area in back. If so, there would be no foam in that area.

Don't start cutting until you know what the whole job is! There are penetrating epoxy resin products and other ways to tackle rot issues if localized. Dry it out like you are doing and go slow in decisions to do more.

P.S. Please post what you like and don't like about that boat in the other forum "Boating issues" or whatever it's called. I'd like to hear how the jet drive Regal works but I don't want it distracting the issue in this thread.

Regal..If im visualizing this correctly..you have a small like 1.5 ft x 6-7 ft compartment running in the middle of the floor..you lift up the floor board and there lies your crapped out compartment right ?

That floor wood in this compartment should be independant from the rest of the boat ( i say should untill I see some pics )

send me the origional pics Pearlsunset@hotmail.com

Yeah, you got it man. I figured that this was separated from the rest of the boat. It already seems to be drying out a little from a few days sitting in the sun and having the fans on it(from what I can see).

I apologize that I didn't get pics yet. I will definetely get around to it htis weekend.

Thanks for all of your replies and I'll keep you posted.
