Re: Powerhead Rebuild

Thanks guys - I really appreciate it. I just had the carbs rebuilt.

As for the water pump - wouldn't an impeller be enough?

One quick question about the gel seal - the book recommends OMC Gel-Seal.

Do I need to use this particular brand or can I get a high temp "liquid gasket maker" from the auto parts store?

Impeller and a new set of gaskets would be fine.

But while your at it (an entire powerhead rebuild), it is probably worth your while to replace it all.

Re: Powerhead Rebuild

one question about needle & cage bearings (for the rods) - the book says that the cages rarely need to be replaced. On mine, the needles fall right through on most of them.

Does this mean that the needles are worn down to a smaller diameter? For 1 set of needles and cage it is basically $50 each. Needles only for all 4 bearings = $30.

How about replacing the needles only?

Thanks,

the needles are just fine, dont worry about the cages,FYI there are some cages that have the berings kinda locked in.Known as caged to most guys that rebuild.Just use what you have and new needles, dont forget to CHANGE the bottom CRANKSHAFT bering.Dont know if you know, but there are after market manufctures that sell the stuff your looking for. perhaps sold t this site, but not sure. Pro Marine has the needles, the bottom main, and gasket sets,as well as ,( Im now told) piston sets. If I were you, I would find out what size you need to go on EACH cyl. to rebuild ,I prefer to keep alll 20 or alll 30,but its a me thing, nothing wrong with mixing, but do yourself big favor,go new piston kits all the way, your saving a bundl;e to start, and that having some time on it ,your definaty out of spec.Would be hell if the good powerful cyl. had 2 that had new rings with outa round holes??

Permatex 51813 is the same thing as OMC gel Seal, available at most auto parts stores

Re: Powerhead Rebuild

Couple of things:
1. The lower bearing on the crank shaft - the book says to use a clamp style puller - none of the auto parts stores has them in their loaner programs, and don't carry it for that matter. One independant store stocks one, but the puller is about $60!

Anybody got a much cheaper way than this to remove the lower bearing on the crankshaft?

2. I can't find the permatex 51813 gel seal - found the "51817 anarobic gasket maker" but I am guessing it's not the same thing. Looked at 3 stores - none had it. Any suggestions for the gel seal?

Thanks,
Sm

I read in one of my seloc/clymer manuals that you want to be careful about the omc gel seal. Anything else they say creates a shimming effect, and you don't want that because tolerances between bearings and seals will be compromised. If you can't get that permatex 51813 what about getting the real deal from an OMC dealer?

Just take it to a machine shop. They'll pull it off for you for a few $$.

Swamp, you can buy mini gel seal tubes from your local OMC dealer and they are relatively cheap in comparison to what you are going to spend on the rebuild.

Re: Powerhead Rebuild

I don't mind buying the real thing from the dealer, but am guessing the do not stock it. Therefore I was looking for what was mentioned above as the "same thing". I saw too that anything other than the original will shim.

By the way, I am trying to out it back together, not take it off. I already got all that part covered.

Any ideas on pulling the lower bearing on the crankshaft?

Re: Powerhead Rebuild

I have seen it posted several times that it is a good idea to replace the rod cap bolts.

I would replace the rod bolts, (just cause im anal when doing rebuilds) many mechanics dont replace them but........ be safe and replace them. Sure would hate to do the rebuild again because one of them stretched.
I have never had a problem getting the mini gel seal tubes from OMC dealers and in worst case if they needed to be ordered they could have them in a couple of days.

Re: Powerhead Rebuild

I saw in the manual that I should use some gel seal on the gaskets for the bypass covers, but none of the others were mentioned. Do I only need it on those or should I put some gel seal on all the other gaskets as well?

Thanks,
Sm
