A choke, "chokes" the air intake to give a rich mixture for starting. A primer, "primes" the fuel intake with fuel purging some or all air from the system.

If you're visually trying to see which you have, the primer solenoid will have a wire and one hose running to it and several small hoses running away from it, one for each carburetor. A choke solenoid will have one wire running to it, with a plunger coming out and connecting to linkage on the carburetors to actuate the choke plate(s).

a primer squirts extra fuel into the carb. The only air it purges is what air the fuel displaces.
