Help! I have a tiler 1970-1972 25hp Johnson. I bought it from a guy that had it sitting for about 5yrs along with a 18hp Evinrude(roughly around the same year as the 25hp). I got it 25hp running, but it would only run for about 30sec and die. I took the carb off and completely re-built, soaked it in carb cleaner, and changed the spark plugs. It seemed to be okay until, I got it on the water. It had a rough idle and about half way to full throttle, it would lose a lot of power and hesitate until I got it up to full throttle and then it seemed to run great. I decided to clean the carb again, change the gas lines, and put on a in line fuel filter. Getting back on the water, it still had a rough idle, but ran perfect in gear 1/5 throttle and up. About 5 miles later, it then would go from full throttle running perfect to almost a complete power loss. I went to running about 30mph to about 8mph, back and forth until it was nothing, but 8mph, like the spark plugs had fouled out. I checked the compression and both cylinders are little above 120. Considering the carb on the 18hp was identical to the 25hp, I rebuilt it, soaked it in carb cleaner, changed the spark pluges again, and the gas(50:1 w/87 unleaded fuel) and put it on the 25hp, but still the same thing. In addition, the bottom spark plug seems to be getting oil on it and now I have not had it running right since that one day. When it's idling, it seems like it's missing, it goes from rough idle to, ever so often, jumping, acting like it wants to run right, but does not. I now don't know what else to do, but think, I made a terrible purchace. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Sounds like you are dropping a cylinder. Next time out take a timing light and a buddy with you to check the spark when it does this. Have him hook it up and check each wire for spark. In the meantime inspect your coils for any ooze dripping or cracks in them. Remove the wires from the block and clean the connections thoroughly, You might also check your plug wires for cracks that would let your spark arc to the block thus losing it for the cylinder.

When you rebuilt the carbs did you put in new carb kits and blow out all passages with high pressure compressed air (not rattle cans)?

Re: Shudder or loss of power

Actually, I gave them to a guy that works at a boat delership that said , he would help me work on my motors. As far as I know, he took them apart and cleaned them thoroughly. However, I do know, he did not use a new carb kit when, he cleaned them. He is a mechanic there and was confindent they looked good after, he cleaned them. I read on the net, I could get a complete guide to my motor at Napa. Is that true? I've never taking a boat motor apart before, but have worked on many cars, so I would feel much more comfortable taking this thing apart with a step by step guide walking me through the process. Also, could someone tell me the year? I not sure this is what, you would need, but it had J3264460 on the side of it. I really appreciate you guys even taking a interest in my ad. Thanks!

Re: Shudder or loss of power

You can find the model number on a metal tag of the mounting bracket. If you look at your engine from the side it should be apparant. You will need the model number to get an OEM manual for this engine. In the meantime you can go to your local library and look at a Seloc or Clymer manual for decent information but they are not near as complete as an original shop manual. Sometimes they pop up on ebay. Be prepared to spend about fifty or sixty bucks but it will pay for itself when you save that first hour's charge of shop labor.
