I'm assuming you are referring to a 305 GM?.....
What year?
You probably need Merc. manual #2....
That is not available online.....:'(
But if you have some specific questions, I will try to help........JK
With the engine in the #1 firing position, the following valves may be adjusted.......
Exhaust-1-3-4-8
Intake-1-2-5-7
In the #6 position
Exhaust 2-5-6-7
Intake 3-4-6-8
Back out the adjusting nut until lash is felt at the push rod, then turn nut until all lash is removed...
This can be determinedby moving the push rod up & down while turning adjusting nut until all play is removed
Tighten 1 full turn....
& that's it.......
This is for a standard rotation engiine, btw........;)

I would suggest that you look on ebay for a Merc. manual #2.....
I'm sorry, I don't know where to send you for a parts manual......:/

Re: mercruiser 220 cc 228HP engine

a) #1 firing position means that the #1 Piston (closest to front) is at the very top of it's stroke (top dead center - TDC) and ready to fire (burn fuel), both valves closed. End of Compresssion stroke, just before Power stroke.

b) btw = by the way, does not mean very much the way Haut used it, and not crtitical to the point about standard rotation.

Re: mercruiser 220 cc 228HP engine

thanks for your reply.I tried to learn as much as possible in the meanwhile and i want to ask this: if i (the mechanic) do the adjustment as you describe that means that i dont have to check the clearance of the intake and exhaust valves at the point where both of them are open(at the end of 4th cycle) by using the feeler gauge?

Nope, once you turn them down 1 turn, that is it.....
No need for a feeler gauge.......
The #1 cylinder is is front right facing the engine.....:)
