1993-94 Evinrude 88hp alarm

My 1993-94 model 88hp Evinrude outboard started up and ran for about 5 minutes and then an alarm came on. I shut everything down and when I turned the key again the alarm sounded off but the engine did not turn over. The next day I turned the key, the motor started, I checked to make sure there was water being discharged and there was but after about 5 minutes the alarm came back on. Can you tell me what might be my fix?

When was the last time you replaced the water pump & t-stats?

The thermostats were replaced after I purchased the motor used in 2000. That is the last tune-up i'v needed. Thanks for the reply!

The motor has almost certainly overheated, which now requires that you replace the cylinder head gaskets after getting a new water pump impeller and testing your thermostats.

How often should water pump impeller & t-stats be replaced? Have any idea how much head gaskets, impeller and t-stats replacements will cost at a certified mechanics?

if you know which end of a wrench is which, you can do it by studying the manual. i"d do the impeller 1st and give it a try. impellers should be change atleast every 3rd year. shutting it down is the best thing you could have done. i have and 88 88hp. super engine.
