Hey guys! new to this site, a good friend told me about this web site and maybe someone out there can help me with this problem. I have a 18' bass boat and the other day i was running to my fishing hole for some pre tournament fishing. Without any worning i stuck a log and put a 6" crack in the haul. I have been reading some other post about gelcoat repair but haven't came across anything close to my problem. I need some help if someone knows anything about making this repair. Here is some pictures of the crack.

Re: gelcoat repair questions

Since I had trouble posting a new thread, I'm going to add to this one.

Since I am too lazy to break out the spray gun to repair a small area of gelcoat, I have been brushing it on. The problem is that I can't get a thick enough coat by brush. After sanding out the orange peel and brush marks, the coating is so thin it is translucent. Subsequent coats do not give me any more build-up. Any way or hints on how I can get a thick enough coating to allow for sanding? Can I brush on one coat without air barrier and when it gets tacky brush on another again? The repair including overlap for blending in is only about 1 foot square. Thanks guys.

Yes, you can brush on as many layers as needed and only put wax in the final coat. Normally brushed or rolled gel coat gives an uneven surface, an easy way to get a better surface it use a squeegee or bondo type spreader to apply the final layer of gel coat. this will fill the low spots, but not add any thickness to the high spots, so the surface will be much smoother.

Re: gelcoat repair questions

Hello there,

Originally you said that you had a 6'' crack in your hull. If this is so, it must be repaired properly. ie repair the crack before you repair the gelcoat. If the damage is limited to just scraping off some gelcoat, then you are OK.

Have a great day,

Rob.

man..Id hate to give bad advice..

If you hit a log then you should determine how bad the damage was..

If it the damage is through the glass...then should be repaired both inside and out m8 ( glass )

You can brush the gel tacky to tacky..but..no wax untill the final coat ( its a crap shoot..get your sprayer out and shoot it correctly would save you time.. ) thats the only way to be sure you can have a fair job at the end.

Thats far beyond just gel coat damage, it looks like you have a total punture with a chunk missing. You will most likely need to get to the inside to repair and reinforce that properly, I think I'd want to take a closer look inside either way just to be safe.

reeldrag,

That is a real drag. You got much more than gelcoat repair to worry about. There is a chunk missing from the corner of your hull. Need to do some fibreglass repairs before the gelcoat
