Fuel Tank Wiring

i have an 18' starcraft with the fuel tank located in the floor. There are 3 wires that go to the aluminum tank. A white w/gold stripe, a black and a pink. The white and the black start at the battery compartment (nothing was hooked up), and the pink started at the fuel gauge and goes to the tank sending unit. The black is grounded to the tank, but for the life of me i can't figure out what the white wire is for. It doesn't connect to the tank, but comes out of the floor by the boat tank filler tube. Any suggestion? The power to the gauge is supplied with a red wire from the battery.

Re: Fuel Tank Wiring

What year and model is your Starcraft? Does the tank sit on the floor behind sliding doors? I am in the process of completely rewiring an 18' SuperSport out board myself. The schematic that I have indicates that the pink is the signal wire connecting the gauge to the sending unit, a black wire grounds the tank and a green wire bonds the filler opening to the tank in common with the black wire.

Is it possible that the white wire with the gold tracer is the ground for your filler inlet?

Burroak....Thanks for your help. I think your onto somthing there. The white wire was connected to the filler inlet, but it doesn't connect to the aluminum tank. It goes to the battery area, but it has no connector end on it and was just laying there. Should I put a connector on it and connect it to the negative side of the battery? This will have continuity with black to ground tank, white to ground filler tube, both connected to the negative post on the battery. Sound like a plan (yes - no )?

The ground gets made that way. It's just a long way to go and more places to get snagged and abraded .My schematic indicates it should be paired with the black wire and bonded to the tank. My thinking is that it will dissipate static electricity when filling.

I am on the same page with you. Thanks for the help. The wire being white i was going to hook it to the positive, but now I understand the logistic and will treat it as a ground. Use to work on aircraft and I understand the need to protect against static spark. Your a gem for taking the time to help.

Re: Fuel Tank Wiring

My diagram calls for a green wire, which I identify with since the little pigtail that grounds an AC receptacle to it metal box is green.

I am completely rewiring an 18' Super Sport outboard with OEM color coded wire and am having a devil of a time finding the colored wires w/stripes. I'm down to the gray wire with a green stripe and gray with a blue stripe. Any ideas?

When I get into these situations i improvise. How about a solid gray wire and a green water proof felt pen? I don't think I have seen 2 color wire in the store, but we all know that they make it. The next choice would be a boat wreaking yard.

I regularly strip out wiring for JUST that purpose...striped wires!
Old cars, dryers, boats etc
Even if I don't have enough to go the distance, I'll solder it on the ends (solid/stripe) I need to 'make it right'
