Pulled my dads boat to lake this weekend. This motor was running 5 days ago but when we tried to start it saturday it never fired. No fire at plugs or coil.Could a coil or trigger go bad just sitting on the trailer.A tech told him years ago not tocharge battery with cables hooked up it would short out trigger so he has always unhooks battery before he charges battery.Any ideas?

check the safe switch it will keep the motor from sparking but will allow it to turn over. it is always the last thing people check when they run into this as the motot will turn over. if that is not it let us know and someone else might have another idea not sure about your year motor but the safe switch works the same on most motors.

Punchy, Make sure you have +12V on the red wire on the switchbox at all times. The white wire (under the red one) should have power from the ignition switch when the ket is set to run. Here is the troubleshooting procedure courtesy Clams Canino:

MERCURY BATTERY-POWERED CDI TEST
FOR DISTRIBUTOR MODELS

This test is for the 332-2986 switchbox used from 1967-1978 on all the inlines.

This test assumes your coil is good (most all are).

DISCONNCT BATTERY

1. Turn off ignion
2. Disconnect all 3 wires on the distributor side of the switchbox.
3. Remove the HV lead from the coil to the center cap (remember it unscrews
from cap)
4. Reconnect that HV center lead to the COIL side only.
5. Position that HV lead about about 3/8" from ground (block, shrouds etc)
and find a way to hold it there.
6. Jumber the brown and white terminals on the dist. side of the switchbox
together.

RECONNECT BATTERRY

7. Check that you have +12 V at red terminal.
8. Turn on ignition and verify +12V at white terminal (on red terminal side)
9. Touch the black terminal to ground - unit should cause spark each time
you touch ground.

If that passes and it won't fire at all, suspect the trigger

Punchy, the safety kill switch is either in the shifter control box below the key, it will be a toggle switch. Or if not in the control box, it may be a separate switch on the dash. Hope this helps.

Also check the mercury/ tilt switch. If it is bad it will not start and still turn over.
My 2 cents worth, Tim
