I was reading through a recent thread labeled "Sea King help" that stated that the appropriate fuel/oil mixture for the 1960-1963 15 HP Sea King was 24:1. I have an old manual (covers the 3.5, 6, 9.2 and 20hp engines) that indicated 24:1 is appropriate for the first 10 hours, but following this initial start up period the mix should be 50:1. Does anyone have any additional thoughts on the appropraite mix for this motor?

I believe those were the transition years for many motors between 24:1 and 50:1. If it were mine I'd run it at 24:1 even if the book indicated otherwise. It won't hurt it although it may smoke a little more. It's gonna smoke anyway.8) I'd use a synthetic at 24:1.

Back then, there wasn't 2-stroke outboard oil. You dumped a quart of automotive oil in with 6 gallons of gas. When they came up with an outboard 2-stroke oil, many models with full needle bearings could be run at half that amount. I don't think yours will be one of those. Gale was a few years behind Johnson/Evinrude in development. I definately wouldn't run 50:1, but I wouldn't be concerned at 32:1 which is 4oz per gal.

Fish Dr, I assume your manual is speaking of the Chrysler-built motors that came along after 1964. The Sea Kings up to 1963 were made by Gale and the 15 was for the most part same as the 1956 Johnson/Evinrude 15, but with fiberglass hoods. The bottom main bearing was bronze.

I don't understand are you talking about a 15 hp or a 20 hp also what model number is it.
65 Westbend built 20 hp is rated at 48:1 normal service.
66 Chrysler is rated at 48:1 24:1 for severe service.
Gale built 15 is rated at 24:1 final production was 63.
Bottom main and piston pin are bushings.

I probably did not make that clear in the original messge. The motor is a 15hp SeaKing model # GG8823A. I've run about 3 gallons of a 50:1 mixture through the motor since I bought it, but based on the above comments I plan to change the mix. Thanks for the input.

That's a 1960, built by Gale. 24:1 is the mix.

If it has a GG model number, it's a Gale, and should definitely be run at 24:1.
