It's a good motor. My fishing buddy has one on a 17 foot Lund Walleye boat and it pushes that boat at 30+ MPH with two aboard. It's not especially quick out of the hole but that's partially due to the rather tall 1.86:1 lower unit gear ratio.

Thanks Silvertip..

I have a 16' project boat trying to get going.. Someone has a 2001 50 merc in Florida and is asking $2395, says it's in excellent condition..If that's the case then it seems reasonable when you compare the price of the new one.. Dont you think?

If the engine comes from Florida, its probably been in salt water most of its life. I would certainly look for a fresh water motor first. There are some on-line dealers selling brand new 50's for less than $4000 so you might consider checking around. Right here on iBoats is another source.

Thanks Silvertip
Guess I will look around some more or get him to come off that price..Guess Florida's salt water is just as potent as down here in the Caribbean..

Agreed -- but why deal with an already "salted" motor if there are "unsalted" to be had. 8)

You'd be suprised though, I shipped a 1994-225hp Yammie from Key West in 2001 on the back of a 24' Proline, the guy who had it used it to do drift fishing in the keys and used it regularly there. Never had much of a problem since, changed the impeller, thermos, and a stator coil and the thing just wont stop running.. They seem to make those machines to take the harsh environment out there..Comes back to luck I suppose.

Don't all sellers say "Its in excellent condition."?

You're right Solittle,
Tell me where there I can pick up a good used motor and trailer, for my project boat.. last time I went to Big Tuna off Griffin, nothing quite suitable.. I will be on that side for two weeks in May and will have all the time to look around..any ideas?

Merc classics in the 50 hp model are easily top of the line in their class and are in high demand in the used market. At 59 cubic inche displacement they greatly outpower the competition and have proven themselves to be very dependable. Still, I would be very leary of buying a used saltwater motor. Many are junk at five or six years old.
