I found my water intrusion problem on my 97 75hp mecury a bad exhaust cover plate gasket. What sealant if any is used on these gaskets? Do both sides get a bead? Which brand is recommended by you guys. Thanks..........

I don't think any is called for..at least the ones I have changed didn't. You have to torque all those bolts in the correct sequence though..do yo have a manual?

Yeah I've got the manual and the correct sequence with the torque specs, there was no mention of any sealer in it that's why I posted this just to make sure. Thanks..........

The manifold gaskets on the newer motors are probably impregnated with a sealer/glue already.

Proper preparation of the sealing surfaces, and following torque specs, are more important.

One tip, if you're running in salt, a very thin coating of Permatex #3 Aviation-type gasket dressing on the bolt threads will prevent salt buildup around the bolts and make it a lot less painful if you ever have to service the manifold again.

I ordered some new bolts with the gaskets to replace some that were a little corroded, I've had no luck finding any Permantex # 3 aviation-type gasket dressing would never seize on the bolts be acceptable.

I'm finding getting the old gasket residue off is more than I expected.

Thanks......
