I'm trying to set the timing on my 3.0 mercrusier and I'm having difficulties.
The carb cover says 1 degree ATDC, and idle 600-700. So I set the timing and adjusted the idle speed to 700. Now it seems like it's running too rich and diesels after shutting it off after running. My WOT rpm's are also down to 4200. The idle screw is 3 1/2 turns out.
Before I started messing with it the timing was set at 12 degrees ATDC and the engine sounded like it was coming apart and knocking at WOT with rpm's at 4900. With idle screw out 1 1/2 turns it was idleing at 800 rpm's.
Should I try a different timing setting, or should I look at reproping now to get the rpm's correct.
I'm just not sure about the obvious fuel smell and diesling when I turn it off after a 5+ min run across the water.
Thanks
