I took the motor to the shop to have the bearing carrier nut removed and lubricated as recommend by Yamaha. When I put the boat in the (salt)water, I did not have reverse and noticed oil in the water. I went right back to the shop and talked to the mechanic. He removed the carrier nut and found that he had not fully seated the retainer. He said "I pushed the retainer down approxx 1/8" and that fixed it". There was water in the foot lube, so he changed the lube. We verified reverse, ran the motor in a lake for 15 minutes and changed the gear lube again. There was some water, but very little. The mechanic noted the order of events on the ticket and said he will take all responsibility, but doesn’t think there will be a problem. What should I watch for or do?

You say 'shop', is this a Yamaha dealer....I wouldn't take anything back to a place that didn't even verify going into gear before giving it back to you....and you say the mechanic will take full resposibility, not the shop? Sounds like a one man operation....but it's just a few thousand dollars....
