Idle help

I have a 15 hp 1974 evinrude and when I start it the idle is very high. I jammed it into gear once and as I turned the throttle arm it would go faster and slower above a certain point, but would never reduce the RPM's enough when I turned the throttle to slow.I checked the linkage at the throttle arm and it seems to be good. does anyone have some words of wisdom for me?

Re: Idle help

When you lift the tiller handle all the way up on your motor, the gears in the handle are disengaged such that if someone turns the handle while in this position, the timing and throttle positions are changed.

Go here and find the section, it should help:

Ex:"....These gears at the handle pivot have one large flat on each, about the spacing of 2 gear teeth which have to mate, acting as a timing situation & main thrust function. When timed right these 2 wide gears should mate together in a position mostly in the upper position."

Re: Idle help

thanks for your time, but that is not the problem. I have looked at the linkage and tried playing with the idle stop. the throttle goes al the way yto the idle stop plug and the I tried reducing the idle stop and it had no effect.

Re: Idle help

First I would like to say thank you for helping me, I can't wait to help someone else. you asked me if the butterfly is moving. if the butterfly is the part that closes when the choke is pulled it is not doing anything when i use the throttle. one thing that i have noticed is the cam follower which is hooked to the carborator does not an anything attacthed to it to make it retract as i decrease the throttle. I don't know if it is supposed to and if it is what has happened to that piece. I have the intake vent pulled off the carborator and i was waiting to see responses before i took the hole thing off.

Re: Idle help

Sorry, I was not speaking of the idle stop:

It would be good of you to look at the carburetor diagram in the parts catalog so that you would better understand the mechanism. The choke plate is in the front of the carburetor throat and cuts off the air and increases the amount of fuel pulled by the pistons when you use it for a cold start - Behind that is the throttle plate.

Re: Idle help

ALright I have been messing with it and I noticed that the Cam follower ( a piece on top of the carborator that controls the opening and closing on the carborator) is not retracting all the way. I sarted the motor and bushed it back to the cam and the RPM's went down.So the problem is what ever makes go back is not allowing it to fully retract. like i said before it is retracting, but it will not retract all the way.

Re: Idle help

alec,
You may try some spraycarb cleaner on the throttle shaft and work it back and forth, without the motor running.
