 Have 1997 Mariner 250 outboards. When running along I have an alarm that sounds off about every five minutes. The alarm has a series of several beeps of the same tone and then 2 beeps of a higher pitch tone. Everything appears to be working fine. Can anyone explain this alarm?

Any warning lights come on?
Assuming you have an EFI engine, low oil in the reservoir or a malfunctioning engine sensor will give you four beeps and a beep every 2 minutes.

No lights that I could see. All of the gauges also looked normal. It was about 4 beeps followed directly by 2 sharper pitched beeps and then silence for about 5 minutes. Then it repeated itself.

Re: Beeping Alarm

There are oil tanks on your motors that have to be absolutely full to the point of overflowing. If the level drops below the neck, an occasional alarm will sound. With the motors running, loosen the caps enough to let the air work out. Once oil comes out, snug them back up.

Otherwise you have a non-critical fault. That could be a lot of things and you'll need to take the boat to a dealer to diagnose with their computer. Different tones often indicate a bad alarm.

I have a '88 80hp Merc and the alarm beeps all the time and when I put it in gear an a little gas it kills. Do you think this is similar to bowsers problem? Also, are there two oit resevoirs? Thanks. Jim
