Wiring Problems with 60hp 1960

Got a 1960 60hp a few weeks ago. It only has limited wires.
One black wire that goes from a toggle switch to the magneto then to the cut out sensor on the side of the motor. One wire from the cut out sensor back to the toggle switch. As for the other to wires one is positive to the starter motor and the other is a negative to the battery.

I no I need to hook up a starter solenoid for the starter motor. By what I read in previous posts the toggle switch should stop the motor when turn on to create a circuit.

This would be good if I could get the motor going. Plenty of spark Plenty of Fuel. So I figure it must be the wiring. Can anybody help with where the wires should go on the motor and if I'm missing wires to get it going.

Re: Wiring Problems with 60hp 1960

I've got a wiring diagram for a 40HP Lark that I believe one of the forum members may have made (Paul Moir). My 69 Ski Twin has no charging circuit but the diagram was close enough for me. I'm not sure if it's close enough for yours. Maybe someone will have your diagram or let us know if the one I have will work. I don't want to give you bad information.

i'm not sure, there are others that can verify. but i think you 1960 had the solenoid mounted in a box on the transom. i'm in the process of mounting a 1958 35, with this set up. here's info i have gathered, and so far seems to work. clik on the thumb nail to enlarge. the middle pic is and original connection box. top is what i have done on my boat.

1960 60hp? What is it, a Gale? OR, a 40hp Johnson/Evinrude? A 40 has a vacuum cut-out switch on the side. V-4 cylinder motors did not. Anything over 40hp would be a V-4 cylinder. I probably have a diagram, but need to know what you have. As the famous words say, how about a model number?

Re: Wiring Problems with 60hp 1960

SFA, I had a '59 Fat Fifty with a magneto and distributor ignition, which should be the same as your '60 V-4. The magneto ignition was killed by connecting the black wire on the distributor to ground (negative post of the battery). My dashboard wiring consisted of a switch and two push buttons. The switch ungrounded the ignition, when you wanted to start the motor. One push button sent +12V to the solenoid in the transom mounted box to crank the motor. The other pushbutton energized the choke solenoid. My generator and regulator didn't work, so I didn't worry about the wires that would run the ammeter, which was an option on those motors.

SFA, One more thing, my '59 50HP didn't have any kind of cutout for the ignition or overheat alarm. It did however have a microswitch to keep the motor from cranking (and therefore starting) while it was in gear.

What is the model number of that engine?

There was no 60hp manufactured in 1960.
