Hello,
Recently I acquired a 1980 OMC Stringer 400 / 140. The engine needs a new set of rod bearings. The lower unit however, is in perfect working order, well taken care of and in working order. I cannot find an original service manual, I was wondering if the Seloc manual http://www.selocmarine.com/cart/product_detail.cfm?item__code=3400 is detailed enough for me to take this engine out and replace the rod bearings and also service the lower unit or is it vague and generic.

Thanks

That good huh? I'm more concerned about doing regular maintenance on the lower unit than getting the new rod bearings in. All I really need for that are the torque specs, if the engine is similar to a non marine engine.

Try RAPIDO MARINE DOT COM for a rebuilt long block or short block.

KaGee thanks for the info, but all this engine needs are a set of rod bearings. It would be a bit overkill for me to purchase a whole new long/short block. :D

under what circumstances could an engine just need rod bearings? I can't think of a scenario...except maybe someone lost them out of the kit during a rebuild.
If the rod bearings failed, it was due to lack of oil, or poor quality oil, or debris from contamination or a failure elsewhere in the engine.
If the rod bearings simply wore out, your engine would have to have 4000+ hours on it and everything else inside would also be wore out.

i agree......a marine engine is not the place for a "hillbilly" rebuild......if it needs rod bearings, then it needs much more than that.......not too many tow trucks on the water......

Let me add a little more information...

It needs rod bearings for sure. I will diagnose the rest once I get the boat out of storage.

When one or more rod bearings go, the crankshaft rarely survives. Once the crank's coming out, your further ahead $$ wise to buy a long block from Rapido.

The block is cracked, and it looks like it has been that way for a long time. There was metal embedded in two of the pistons.

Fun fun, looks like it is a trip to the local boat junkyard for me.
