1997 3cyl 35hp evinrude.
So, despite the fact that my tell tale appeared fine, apparently I was not getting enough cooling water, engine overheated.

I replaced the water pump, and the impeller was worn, but didn't appear too bad.

Checked compression and had 95 - top cylinder, 100 and 100 on the other two. Looking through the spark plug holes with a fiberoptic light, there appears to be some scuff marks on the top cylinder.

Fired it up last night and it seemed to run fine, although I didn't run it too long, just about 5 min while tied to the dock.

So, I guess I'm still concerned about long term damage. Do you think I should just run it, or should I be doing something else?

thanks,

Most good mechanics insist on replacing the cylinder head gasket whenever there is an overheat. At a minimum, you need to re-torque the cylinder head bolts to spec.

thanks for the info guys. I did re-torque the head bolts. Is it worth pulling off and replacing the gasket?

Are you sure the thermostat wasn't the culprit and not the water pump? I think I'd be checking that out real good if I were you.

gaskets are cheap. just don't break a bolt.
