Well cant seem to find anyone that knows what will interchange with this motor. I had another post on here trying to find out what other lower units will fit my 1978 Mercury Black Max 150hp V6. So does anyone know where I can find one? Im finding some good deals on ebay but dont know what else will interchange with my unit. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Need a lower unit

The early V-6s used the same gearcases as the inlines. I'm not sure when they changed configurations, but it'll probably coincide with speedo pickups being added. I'm sure most anything from the 70s would be safe. I can't guarantee about gear ratios, but that can usuallly be compensated with prop pitch.

Thanks Willy that helps alot! So if I find lower unit from a 1978 inline the unit should work ok then? Or close to the same year anyways?

Thanks!

Mitch, I do not think there is such a thing as a 1978 Merc 150HP inline. There is a 140 HP inline made in 1978, which is identical to the '77 Merc 150HP inline.

Re: Need a lower unit

See this is what I keep running into one person says that the early V6s is the same as the inlines and then the next one says they wont interchange! LOL! Does anyone know for sure???? Ive bid on a inline unit on ebay and dont want it if it wont work. If the gear ratio on the inlines are different I have been told by a dealer I can compensate with prop pitch. All I need to know is if the inline 150hp will bolt up to my motor? Even the dealer here didnt know for sure if they would interchange. But told me if it will bolt up to my motor I could make it work with a different prop.

Thanks!!

Re: Need a lower unit

Well just found out what ive been tryin to find out! 76' thru 80' inline engines will interchange with my 78' Black Max V6! from a 1500 all the way down to possibly a 65hp! The numbers on all these are the same. THANKS WillyBWright you hit the nail on the head! I appreciate all who responded....and hope this will help someone else out needing a lower unit.

Thanks!!

Mitch.
