I seen it mentioned a couple times about putting epoxy over a cracked block, or over the weld if it was fixed that way. What kind of epoxy is being referred to here? Examples, links? Would this work if your crack was under the intake manifold?

They make an epoxy also that some guys say is better than JB weld.I'm not sure what it is called. The JB weld always works good for me.Make very sure you grind the metal down and have a good rough surface for the JB to adhere to.The stuff takes forever to dry and will run.Best thing would be to put on a couple coats and to sand it down a little between coats..

I wouldn't even Attempt a repair in the Lifter Valley,......

There are No Epoxies that like Oil Soaked Cast Iron........

If it's the Inderside Of the Intake Manifold,..... I'd buy a New Manifold......

I've seen Many Successful Epoxy Repairs on the Outside of the Block,.....

Yeah, I guess it is in what you are referring to as the Lifter Valley. Can those be welded effectively?

dvan, anything can be welded by an accomplished welder. The questions are do you have access to such a person and what's the cost. It might be cheaper to replace the item. Good luck.

Yeah, I've been planning on replacing the block the whole time, I was just curious because the block replacement process is taking a lot longer than I anticipated. Luckily the weather hasn't been that great so I haven't been too itchy to get out there.

In order to Weld the Crack in the Lifter Valley,.......

You'd need to Pull the Engine,+ Strip it to a Bare Block Casting,....

Then after you Tried to weld it, Which Won't Work due to the Thickness of that area, or actually the Lack of thickness,.....

You'd Still have a Cam that's No Doubt running Untrue,+ Out of Place by Several thousandths , due to the movement,+ stresses In the block,....

Then you'd have a 'ell of a time getting all the Slag, Grindings,+ general Crud out of the casting,....

After That, You could Reassemble Everything back into the Block....... After which, you'll be mounting the rest of the accessories to the motor,+ installing it........

After All that dickin' around,....... Odds Are,......... It'll Still Leak........

Btw, Tie 1 On,........ Who Welded Your Broken Ford Block last year,..??..??.....

Yeah, a crack like that isnt something youd want to try and repair. replace the block. I do however keep a tube of JB weld on board for emergency repairs. It will patch a hole in a block enough to get you home.

Belzona http://www.belzona.com/1111.aspx is another epoxy that works well, I've used it to repair blocks, heads, and other castings. not a crack down the middle of a block tho...

Ayuh,...... That's the Lifter Valley,.........

Let me Guess,.... The Crack is to the Rear of center,..?..??....

You can Try the epoxy,.... But I would be Planning on a Repower in the Near Future......

I've just Never had Any luck with Epoxy,+ Oil Soaked Cast Iron......
And,....Any Grinding you do for Prepping it,.... All the Filings,+ $h!t Is going to be Run Thru the motor..... There's No Way to keep it out.... Unless you strip it to a Bare Block......

Re: Epoxy over a crack

Actually, the crack is toward the front of center, but almost dead center. I know what you mean about the filings and such. I had started to take the old gasket off, with a rag over the cam, but could tell if I really go into it I would end up with cr@p everywhere in there.
