I have a 5HP Sea King. Its a 15GG-1905. 5D10 . I think its a 1951. Its starts and runs perfect. Can anyone tell me how to replace the impeller? I want to make sure I dont overheat it. I dont really see a lot of spit coming out of the side vents.

Re: 5 HP wards sea king impeller

Is it a direct drive lower unit, or does it have a neutral clutch? They switched water pump systems right around the year of your motor, I'm not sure exactly when.

The older direct drives are a "wobble pump" system that uses a "rotor" instead of an impeller. The water pump assembly is right behind the propeller, and runs off the prop shaft. The propeller itself actually has water holes in it to help feed the pump. The neutral clutch versions have a regular vaned rubber impeller. The water pump assembly is right above the cavitation plate, like a modern outboard. It runs off the driveshaft. Two diffferent systems, two different procedures for replacing the parts. Need to know what kind you have.

Great motors!

Your 5D10 model has a neutral clutch and the pump is in the 1st bulge above the cavitation plate. Unclamp the neutral wire at the lever. Then remove the 4 bolts at the bulge. See the 1/4" thick plate at that place? Drop that plate down with the lower unit and remove from motor. The neutral wire will come with it. Don't worry about getting it back up in there, it feeds up through a tube.

Now, separate the 1/4" plate from the lower unit for access to the screws that hold the water pump cover to it. The rest is obvious. The problem is, they don't make that impeller any more. But you can use one for a 5.5 or 6hp Johnson, part number 277181, by reaming the hole oversize enough to go over the drive shaft.

WARNING! If the end of the neutral wire is frayed, don't pull it down out of the tube. You'll have a devil of a time trying to get it back up. But there is a way. Check back here for further advice if that is the case.

Good advice so far...you can get an owners manual from acmeoutboards.com not an endorsement, just trying to help keep the old iron in service. Those are stout little outboards...keep it and run it a good long time.

Thanks for the replies. It does have an impeller after I took the 4 bolts off at the housing. I didnt take the neutral cable off yet to get at the impeller because its frayed. Can you tell me the trick? Im going to have to get the manual eventually. This outboard Is a blast to work on. Again thanks for the help guys.

Remove the 4 slotted screws from the bottom of the plate and pull it down just far enough to clear the drive shaft and swing it aside, leaving the cable in the tube.
