Run the long screw from the back cover into one of the small holes. They are threaded and will jack the pivot pin up out of the hole.

They are threaded alright, trust me. I've removed enough of them to know.

The cover on the back of the outdrive that covers the shift mechanism.
Or any 1/4-20 bolt with about and inch and a half of threads.

Now thats the the tricks of the trade that i
was looking for.I have just enough tools to
make me dangerous. That said I can do brakes
on most cars. The rears on the cad were
tuff.
I have never remove the uper unit befor so im
old enough to no that i need to get all my ducks
in a row befor i start this job.

thank you for the tip Mike H from MI.

Don your right. the first time I look at that
little hole I didnt see any threads.
That helmet pin came right out.
now I can get started removeing
the uper unit.Im going slow with this
like you say get lt right the frist time!
why do you think thay threaded just
the portside the starbord side has plastic
in it
does the bottom steering fork black plastic
bushing go in from the inside of the boat?
or upside down on the fork ?
Thanks Mike H

Someone has probably broke off something in the one hole. There are 2 threaded holes............ Trust me.
The bushings are both inside.
If you want to work on your drive and transom shield, then you need a manual. Go to your local Volvo Penta dealer and get outdrive manual #7731624 (about 20 bucks) and also get the OEM engine manual, also about 20 bucks.
