I plan on installing my outdrive today............at the end of last season when I removed the drive I neglected to put it in forward and it came off with some difficulty (as would be expected).

After inspection of the shiftshaft on the drive, it didn't seem to have sustained any damage............

Any way I can tell after installation if there is any binding before I put it in the water or start the engine?

BTW..........here's to a trouble free season!!!

Re: Installing Outdrive

Hey Tony,.......
I was just thinking about you yesterday,... Haven't seen you around lately........

If you Closely inspect the Shaft from the outdrive,+ the Shoe,+ linkage in the Transom Assembley,.....
And you Can't See any damage,......
Put it together, In Forward,....... Then try Shifting it......
You don't need to Start the Motor,.... Just Shift it,+ Check by turning the Prop each way.......

Good Luck.....

I'm no expert but I don't think that having it in forward would be the problem. It could be that the engine has shifted slightly and you'll need the alignement tool to adjust the motor mounts before it goes back on. I'm sure others will chime in on this.
Good luck

Re: Installing Outdrive

Is this an Alpha? I think the main problem that can be caused is bending the intermediate shift shaft. (I think that is what it is called). On my dad's boat - it had been bent and would cause a binding situation when installed and trying to shift. It acted like the shift cable was bad when it wasn't. It wasn't readily obvious that is was bent until it was disassembled. Just something to look at.

Re: Installing Outdrive

Got drive installed.............had (2) problems.

1) Adapter for remote resevroir was stripped..........replaced it.

2) When I tried to shift it seemed to be binding........thought I had a bent shaft. removed drive and found the end of the shift cable not seated in the drive correctly....the part in side the drive with the arm. Repositioned, reinstalled the drive and all is well.

Recoverd the boat for the nor'easter tomorrow..........really wanted to do moe though.
