I have a 2004 Yamaha 50TLRC with very few hours. At idle, in gear (forward and reverse), the lower unit makes a noise that resembles a bad bearing. Out of gear there is no noise. If the motor is trimmed up (at idle) but the prop is still in the water, the noise goes away. if the motor is lowered all the way down, the noise is very prevelant at idle. The noise disappears with a little more fuel and a little higher RPM. I have checked the prop shaft end play, and it's not bad. I've checked the lower unit lube, it's fine with no shavings (yet). Any ideas would be helpful... thanks in advance

Rattle, whirring, or whine? Stainless or aluminum propeller?

It's more of a rattle I guess. If you've ever had a front wheel bearing growl at ya, that's what I can relate it to. As a matter of fact, I didn't notice the noise prior to putting on the stainless steel prop. I'll pick up a spare aluminium prop to see if the noise goes away... I gave my old aluminum prop to a buddy of mine...

Ya'll ain't gonna believe this... Guess when I took the prop off I didn't put the pieces on right when I put it back together. The thick washer that goes on the backside of the prop - I had it on the frontside... Geeze. It's amazing what I can tear up. Anyway - sorry to waste your time. Smooth missed that one... JIM
