I bought a 10 Hp Evinrude Fas Twin today for $75.00 The serial number is 15032 11728. Can any one tell me exactally what I have? It appears to be around a 1960's model, but I do not know for sure. It does have almost all of its origional paint in good condition and only has a few knicks and scrapes. It has good spark and the compression seemed fine, but there was no gear oil in the lower unit.(thats how I got it down to $75.00) It seems to shift fine and everything rotates freely and smoothly. I bought it hoping it will not take too much to get it running again and that the lower unit has not been damaged. Reportedly it last ran about two years ago. By the outward condition it does not look like it has been run all that much in its lifetime. The prop even has most of its origional paint.
Once I know what I have I am quessing that I will need a new impeller and carb kit. I will flush out the lower unit since it appears to have almost a grease consistency at the drain plug. I will try to see if there are any leaks and replace any seals as needed. Am I missing anything. Thanks for any help as I would perfer not to buy the wrong parts.

1960 18Hp Evinrude. You obviously have a good grasp of what it'd need. If you'd like, there's a topic up in the FAQs about Awakening a Sleeping Outboard that makes a pretty good guide.

Is it really a 18 hp instead of a 10? I was just going by what was on the cowling. Not that I am upset about that, just surprised.

As the admiral says it's a 1960 18 hp Evinrude Fastwin. Fastwins showed up around 1950 as a 15 hp but grew up to 18 hp by about 55 or 56. This and it's sister Johnsons are one the best outboards ever made. It uses Champion J4J or J6J plugs gapped at .030, and the point gap setting is .020. It needs a 24:1 fuel mix rather than 50:1. 50:1 didn't become the standard until 64 or so. Servicing the water pump/impeller can be challenging...the guys on the Ask A Member board at www.aomci.org will share specific instructions and a diagram if you ask. The challenge is getting the lower unit back on after service...takes some patience and finagling. Some folks use kerosene to flush the old lube from the lower unit...use marine hypoid 80-90 weight lube. You may not need a carb kit if it isn't leaking...if it runs and doesn't leak at the carb you might want to run a can of Sea Foam through the first tank of gas...that's a good cleaning/decarboning agent...you can find it at auto parts stores. The initial settings for the carb needles are 3/4 to 1 turn out (counterclockwise) for the High speed needle (bigger, longer one) and 1 and 1/4 turn out for the slow speed needle. Turn them gently clockwise until they seat/stop and then back them out to these settings. Might check the fuel pump, too...sometimes the diaphragms get dry, crack and don't pull fuel well, but kits are cheap. Make sure to replace the 0-ring gaskets on the drain and fill plugs when you service the lower unit. Have fun.

What is the model number stamped on the coin-sized plug on the side of the powerhead? Somebody could have swapped stern brackets and ID plate. The model you gave is for an 18. The same number should be on the powerhead.
