The motor starts fine while I'm holding in the key. Once that gas has burnred our of the carb I can push in the key again and it will run untill the gas has been burnt up. Is it the fuel pump and if so where is it.

Carburetor varnishing. It/they'll need disassembly and cleaning. The fuel pump is between the carb(s) and fuel line into the motor.

So are you saying the carb is dirty? Or are you saying check my fuel pump?

Thanks,

Tucker

Carb needs cleaning/rebuild.

Assuming you are talking about your 70 hp Force.

Typically, pushing in the key, actuates the choke.
But on your motor, you don't have a conventional choke that restricts the air flow.
Instead, you have a fuel enrichment valve.
Push the key and the valve opens, and extra fuel flows into the intake manifold. It uses fuel pressure supplied by the fuel pump.
So if the fuel enrichment valve is working and supplying more fuel, then the fuel pump is likely working also.

So, order up a carb kit from Mercury, and have at it. :)

Re: Only getting gas when I hold the key in.

I looked up Mercury parts express for a carb. kit. They also had some pics of the carb. So I printed them out and went to work. I ended up haveing some trash in my jets. So I cleaned the carb real good and put it back on the motor. She started up and runs fine. I carried here to the lake a ran it for about 30 min. and no problems. So I'm proud of myself.... But I also want to say thanks to yall guys for helping me out.

Thanks,

Tucker

Yes, them guys really know there engines. This is the first boat motor I have ever worked on. And this fourm really helped me. Also I bought some parts from iboats and they had great service. My parts were shipped out fast. I also bought some parts from mercury parts express and I still have not received them. There here in Mississippi also. So I dont know where they get express from but iboats were really quick.

Thanks again,

Tucker

You're welcome.

Tucker, you might want to check with Mercury on that order.
They underwent a major ordering/distribution computer overhaul 2 weeks ago.
Your order may have "disappeared" during the change.

That motor of yours is very easy to work on.
Lots of room and access to parts, simple and straight forward.
Good Job :)
Take care of her.
