Hi everyone,
For those that do not know I am switching over to a 5.7l vortec in my boat.
It came with a 5.0 so it is an easy swap.
I have been looking to see what I need without my manuals (should have been here by now)
I have the
new longblock and all the original accessories.
I just kind of want a heads up on some parts I may be forgetting. I don't want to put it all back together to hear I should have done/replaced something that I didn't know about.
So far I figure I need.
water pump
impeller kit for raw water pump
exhaust manifolds (do I need new risers? the manifolds cracked from freezing, do the risers crack just the same?)
Fresh water system which comes with T-stat
Belts
transom bellows kit comes with gimbal bearing
alignment tool for gimbal
I will inspect coupler and u-joints and replace as needed.
carb kit or new carb for the 5.0-5.7 swap
Do/should I be getting anything else like, shift cable, exhaust bellows(current ones are perfect and supple) is there a pump in the sx-m outdrive that needs to be replaced.
I will inspect hoses carefully and replace as necessary. I already found one that has been rubbing on back of block.
Once I get my manual I will be able to see any other parts affiliated with the ones I feel I need but am I missing something? What else would you do when you have the motor and drive out and apart?
Thanks everyone

If you are putting on new manifolds on a new engine, of course put on new risers. They should always be replaced when the manifolds are.
I assume tuneup items will also be replaced on a NEW engine. Cap, rotor, spark plugs, wires if damaged. But being 2000, they (plug wires) should be fine.

There are allot of 5.7L vortec long blocks available. What one and where did you end up choosing?

Re: Help me finish my check list.

Thanks everyone.
I got the longblock from my local machine shop. They changed out the head gaskets for me but now that I am going freshwater cooling I guess it doesn't matter much. (brass plugs all around) I emailed up a few "marine" rebuilders and I asked them what the difference was between a marine and truck block. They said price and warranty.
All ignition parts will be replaced. Wires look fine but I am going to get just about everything new so I can start a service program without having to remember what got replaced or what didn't. Spares are always good anyway.
I am wondering about shift cable. I always hear people should replace?
I am having a real hard time finding the electrical and fuel manual, so I am hoping I get it all hooked back up right..... If I don't you guys will help me out, no? hahaha :)
Thanks everyone and take care.

Yes trim tabs..
I have been reading some threads on them and had asked some questions around here.
I think for now and because I am ruining my budget, I am going to go with the smart tabs and if I do not like them I will look into the others.
Didn't you say you had a prop for me?:D
Take care

I meant smart tab's and yes at $129.00 for a set in black in dirt cheap, if you want stainless ill give you a pair for 60.00 and as to the prop i have a 22 pitch 4blade stilletto that will make that sled of your's dance.

Re: Help me finish my check list.

It sounds like you have plenty to do in the near-term, but don't trash that 305. You can tear it down and sell the piece parts on ebay. The vortec heads, if not cracked, and the marine roller cam/lifters (if not reusing) will bring you a little payback.
