It would be helpful if you posted the type of motor along with your question...and in the title of the thread

Your powerpack is centered between the cylinder banks at the top rear of the engine. You should not attempt to service it without a service manual.

You can see the "Ignition" components and parts lists for your motor at the BRP parts catalog site:

The OMC Factory Service Manuals for your specific motor are the best. The Evinrude and Johnson are the same except for the paint, decals and cover. Go to Ebay.com and enter
260069513863
or
270051426545
in the search window.

where is the power pack?!

Take it to a marina . It has two power packs and if one goes bad the other one is about to go bad also. They both need to be replaced or changed at the same time. It may not even be the power pack but a qualified service mechanic can test it and advise you accordingly. It's not cheap but you don't want to have it fail you out on the water and have to be towed back to shore either. I know I've been there and done that. I was towed by a LADY about 4 miles. I was greatful she happened to come along. It was the first time I ever had any trouble with the motor and I had both packs replaced and never had any more problems with the motor. Johnson 15R 77 I sold the boat and motor last year and it was heavily used.

Don't take that too seriously, Bowrider. The assumption here is that some people have the ability and desire to do their own maintenance. Some of us even know how many powerpacks are on a 1974 85HP Evinrude.

The only reason I suggested you take it to a Marina is to be sure it is the power pack that's bad and not something minor or something else a whole lot cheaper which you would have to replace too. you said in your original post you just bought the boat and the previous owner said you needed to replace the power pack. Sorry!

Re: where is the power pack?!

ezeke explained where the one powerpack is on your engine,it's good advice to have a manual to use especially when you forgot where something went(in this case a wire connection)However,if you first DISCONNECT the BATTERY,draw a diagram of what you see inside the cover of the power pack locating the wires and their locations, you should be able to do it without need of a high priced marina. Not all of us have the afforability to run to a mechanic each time something goes wrong, and this forum has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars I'm sure to boaters willing to take on a project.Your engine is a very early engine using a powerpack, since then the outboard industry has grown beyond the ability of many "backyard mechanics"a few yrs after your engine they did develop a system of 2 packs and also the ease of simple plugs thus doing away with the worry of wich wire goes where, but you will find these wires are color coded and have a specific terminal where they attach

Certainly did not mean to start a war, Starcraft85. The two factory manuals that I gave you Ebay references for were buy it now items at $15. each.

Factory manuals have the complete wiring diagrams for your motor including the control and ignition system. They are worth their weight in gold to anyone who wants to understand a specific motor.

I completely agree. The service manual is worth its weight in gold. If you can follow directions and pictures, you are all set.
