1992 Yamaha 25 shift problem

I just replaced the water pump impellor on my 92 25 hp Yamaha, reassembled and now it seems as if the shifter linkage is out adjustment. I set the long adjusting nut which ties the upper and lower rods together at the same position but I now have a ticking noise coming from the gearbox when in neutral, which goes away when the shifter lever is pushed slighty astern, as if it is not disengaging from gear all the way. The gear box shifts fine when off the leg of the motor. Any ideas on initial shift linkage setup?
Thanks for any info, Dave.

u do not have it adjusted right
lime to redo it
best Way is to put in neutral and turn the prop over by hand both ways

Thanks for your reply, I have tried adjusting it while rotating the prop out of gear but still can't seem to get it right. It doesn't take much pressure on the shift lever to get rid of the ticking noise. I'll give it another shot today for awhile .

Success at last, I don't think I had the geabox in reverse all the way when I installed the lower unit and I think I was fighting this the entire time. I'll certainly know next time. Thanks again for your help. Dave
