Russia Plans World's Longest Tunnel, a Link to Alaska

HHhhmmmm…...this has my paranoia antenna sticking strait up in the air, anybody else feel the same way?

<< The project, which Russia is coordinating with the U.S. and Canada, would take 10 to 15 years to complete, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow today. State organizations and private companies in partnership would build and control the route, known as TKM-World Link, he said.>>

<< The Bering Strait tunnel will cost $10 billion to $12 billion, and the rest of the investment will be spent on the entire transport corridor, the plan estimates.>>

<< The planned undersea tunnel would contain a high-speed railway, highway and pipelines, as well as power and fiber-optic cables, according to TKM-World Link. Investors in the so-called public-private partnership include OAO Russian Railways, national utility OAO Unified Energy System and pipeline operator OAO Transneft, according to a press release which was handed out at the media briefing and bore the companies' logos.>>

I guess we could chip in, and go too the local Home Depot parking lot to get a work force ,just tell them you have a little tunnel too dig.

Yes Tree, I agree with Rubber, this is nothing to be worried about. #1 Commercial relations, (two way) tend to decrease the possibility of conflict, (as with China since 1972). One way relationships are better then nothing, (no relationship) but tend to be the way to have some difficulties, (Middle East Oil). #2 There are huge natural gas resources that could potentialy supply a hungry North America. #3 Our manufactured goods could supply Siberia. This is win win! Very little downside, as it would be very easy to block if stretigic cornsiderations cropped up. My $.02. JR

Drop a nuke in the middle of that bad boy! I wonder how far a cruise missile could navigate inside a tunnel?

I don't know......
Nome is still way far from the continental US.......
That's alot of train track to get there....
+ the cost of the tunnel itself?
Seward's Folly, IMHO.......;)

The Ruskies can 'plan' all they want. I'd be surprised (maybe not) if their plan fell on any open ears on this side. $12 billion? Don't think the Ruskies have that kind of pocket change, plus I can't see any reasonable payback for that kind of expenditure. What? they want our Alaskan gold or oil?

Where is the tunnel supposed to make landfall in Alaska. Attu island way out in the Aleutians? Then what? You're still way out in the middle of nowhere. Doesn't seem realistic to me, but what the heck do I know.

OK, Let's get started.....
It will create a lot of jobs...

Total pipe dream. It's near, if not within the rim of fire. Can you imagine a tunnel of that length, shifted the width of the tunnel, half way thru? Do I hear Anchorage circa 1964?

I don't know?? You can run a lot of ferrys and small aircraft for 12 billion dollars. Not only that, you know 12 billion is going to turn into 24 billion and 10 to 15 years will turn into 20 to 30 years. And why are we considering this again?? Jobs?? Trade? Trading what? Anything that's traded that would help pay for this monolithic future disaster would have to make it to mainland USA anyway, and if that's the case, ship it across the Pacific. It's a hairbrained idea. Not to mention all the earthquake and volcanic activity in that region of the world.

Thanks, and no worries. I learned a long time ago, say what you have to say, then get over it and move on. No sense in worrying about the small stuff.

For the record, I was in "netless" land for a few days. Yes Virginia, there ARE still places in America that the WWW hasn't reached.

IMO $ 12 billion would not do it (maybe they are using illegals:rolleyes:) or even get close. And yes I see many problems with it.
