I just got a Sea King 4 hp and need info.
Data plate reads Clinton, Mod #: K400 2106A, Ser #: 68137, Type: 60 27404R.
Need fuel mixture info, source of schematic and parts, appears air cooled, does it have an impeller? Thanks, Jim

Re: Sea King 4 HP info

1972 or 73 4Hp. Those were the only K400 years. Parts are going to be tough. So are manuals. Try eBay for manuals. You might get lucky. The powerhead is air cooled. the exhaust is water cooled. The motor will run with a failed water pump, but runs better with cooled exhaust. Use 2-stroke lawnmower/chainsaw oil. Don't use outboard oil. The powerhead runs too hot for OB oil. 4oz/gas should be safe. Use stabilizer in the gas all the time. It uses so little that it can go bad long before it's used up. A gallon will last all day and then some. The water pump is on top of the gearcase. Try discount-marine-parts.com for parts and info. They might be your only hope for parts beyond sparkplugs.

Fuel mixture should be 16:1 on that Clinton-based engine. As Willy said, use two-stroke oil designed for chainsaws and the like.

Thanks for the valuable info, especially the fuel ratio. How difficult is it to get to the impeller, where would I start looking for the replacement part? It will run, but I'm going to do a carb clean and replace fuel lines, etc.
Again, thanks, Jim

Most of the low horsepower Clinton outboards used the same impeller, so all may not be lost. discount-marine-parts.com may well have one for your. As Willy said, you can run that outboard with no impeller, but you'll like it better if there is one.

Before you go any further, get it running right then see if there's any water spray out of the holes about halfway up the leg. If you see any, then don't worry about the impeller. Get one if that stops. No hurry.

I have a 5hp Sea King from the same vintage. I'm betting that they both have the same impeller. Mine spits some water out those holes, and the exhaust housing never gets hot, so that's about the normal amount of water.

If mine is like yours, It has a tillotson carburetor on that Clinton engine. A small engine repair shop can probably provide a carb kit, since most of the tillotson's on the small hp engines use the same kit.

Re: Sea King 4 HP info

The carb cleaning helped. The only problem is the fastener on the bottom that holds the bowl to the body, that female hole in the body is very nearly stripped and its hard to get the bowl on tight. Its sorta tight. I finally got a relatively smooth idle. The throttle butterfly was frozen, but after freeing it, there was good upper speed.
I gapped the plug to .30 and it didn't like it, so went to .28 and it was happy. Hope thats close to right.
I'll check the water blow like you described next time its fired.
Again, thanks for the good advice, Jim

Re: Sea King 4 HP info

If the water pump doesn't work the midsection and steering pivot get stinking hot and hard to steer. Heat is transferred to the powerhead and it overheats too. The fuel pump may vapor lock from heat.

End of thread. My friend dropped it overboard taking it off his dingy. Thanks, we had it running pretty good.
