I have tried two fuel lines /with two different bulbs, same results. Time for a new system?
I have a Johnson 1988 28 SPL, with a Tempo tank. When I connect fuel hose to the motor fuel inlet and pump the bulb it does not build back-pressure. When I disconnect the fuel line from the inlet and pump the bulb no back-press. Then when with a screw driver I depress the connector check ball a very small amount of fuel results, does not appear to be under pressure. Fuel line length 46" overall, 16? from tank to bulb, 30? from bulb to fuel inlet. Arrow pointing from tank to fuel inlet.

Re: Primer Bulb ??

If the tank has a quick disconnect on the fuel line like the engine, you would not be the first person to hook the hose up wrong *twice" so check that first. You used two different fuel lines but you did not use a different tank. Failure to prime can happen for two reasons. First, hold the primer bulb so it points upward rather than horizontal. If that doesn't help, the fuel pickup in the tank is apparently clogged. One trick I've used to clear it is to turn the fuel line around -- connect the engine end to the tank (assuming again you have a quick connect fitting on the tank) and give the primer bulb a couple of quick squeezes. The reverse the hose again and give it a try. If it now primes, you need to remove the pickup tube and clean it and the tank. Check the tank for plastic debris from the drilling and molding operation when the tank was built.

you won't be the 1st one to connect backwards, the buld has an arrow on it the arrow should point to the engine. i've even done it and i'm perfect. HA!

Re: Primer Bulb ??

Thanks for the help

The motor has been sitting since October; the problem explained below was there at the end of the season.

The arrow is pointed toward the motor. The hose connections are not ?quick disconnect?, I wish. Before asking for help I read pervious posts. One of the things I checked was the fuel pick up in the Tempo tank. It did not have a filter/screen, it is a straight 1/2'? plastic tube ?. I can push gas through the line, however after 10> 12 pumps I feel no difference from the first couple of pumps. This is different from what I recall from other motors I have owned in the past.

Problem Expalnation: The engine will start after running for 3-5 min then it stalls, and then becomes very hard to re-start. If I let it sit for 10+ min I can start it and the cycle repeats. One of the things that helps (some time?) shorten the waiting period is to re-prime the engine. Hence I am working my through the fuel system.

Re: Primer Bulb ??

ok, stop where you are. 3 to 5 min is just time enough for it to heat up. 10 min is time enough for it to cool down. have you check spark on both plugs, when it quits? a coil could be getting warm and failing, causing the engine to stop. also on the side of the engine is the fuel pump, follow fuel hose, a black square with a big screw in the middle, behind that is a filter screen, could have gunk in it. remove the screw, and carefully remove the square not damaging the gasket..

Got it fired off, ran for about 10 to 15 Min, and won?t start. Checked both upper and lower spark plugs, no spark. I am waiting to check spark when she cools down?know of addtional tests ?

Now that you've got your attention off the hose and tank you are on the right track.

But just a comment about hose assys. They are crap. I have two of them and neither will pump up hard, never did. Too much backflow through the check valves. And they won't pump at all if pointed downhill or disconnected from the motor. Seems like they depend on the check valves in the fuel pump to serve as outlet checks. I remember when they used to make primer bulbs that work. But not lately.

The old blubs must be the ones I am remembering, They felt like a fellow was getting somewhere by using them. Now I just worry that I am pumping air and not fuel...

Re: Primer Bulb ??

Thanks a whole bunch fellows for your help

Problem appears to be fixed, I removed both of the primary leads from the coils, scraped/cleaned the connectors and reattached. The coil mounting bolts were loose, tighten them some. While I was inspecting the power pack I discovered the wire running to the temperature sensor switch had shorted-out on the wire loom strap fastened to the head bolt. Repaired the wire and fired off the motor first try, it ran smooth and restarted each time I attempted it. Because I am not sure what fixed the problem, I am hesitant to believe it is repaired, make sense?

Re: Primer Bulb ??

Primer ball sucking in,after about 5-10 min.,at full throttle. Boat has been sitting for years. I replaced the gas & added stabilizer. I cleaned out the carbs/jets & vent tube. Also replaced the primer ball & fuel filter. Now, I cant seem to find the pickup/anti siphon valve. I did find a cover in front of the center console, but its for the gas gauge float. Nothing inside the console. Is it underneath ? I have a 1995 Scout 162 Sportfish with a 1994 88 hp Evinrude. Any help would be appreciated.
