I have a 25 hp Evinrude mod E25REOR on a 15' Princecraft aluminum boat. The unit is new to me and I have only had it out a few times. I played with the setup a bit by adjusting the motor tilt in each of the holes provided and found that the 3rd hole from the boat was best. I can get 30.1 mph on the gps. I do not have a tach and was told cannot install one????......anyway the motor has a new alum 10 1/8 x13 prop. As you can see from the pics the motor is deep in the water...The cav plate is close to 1" below the bottom of the boat. If I raise the motor a bit will this increase speed and more importantly performance?...or am I wasting my time?

I think you may be able to install a "Tiny Tach". They are very simple and I believe are compatible with any motor. Do a search on them. I think they are around $40.00 and they include a built in hour meter. I would check with the experts though just to see if it will work on your motor.

By raising the motor some. You will increase efficiency by reducing drag. You should see a bit of speed. If you raise it to much the propeller may cavitate to much. Also keep an eye on the water inlet. Make sure that is in the water all the time.

If your curious, Just try. It is easy to put back down. It is difficult to maximize your set-up with out knowing the WOT RPM. I would definitely raise it at least parallel with the bottom.

You can easily put a TinyTach on that motor and you should:

http://www.tinytach.com./

If you email them with the specifics of your motor they will get back to you with the right one. The tach has its own battery and the sender is just a wire that you coil around the spark plug wires.

The Anti-Ventilation plate is the one just above the propeller should be at least even with, and no lower than, the bottom of the boat.

Re: Motor setup pics

I have had very little luck with my TINY TACH...it only reads every few seconds so it is slow to respond to RPM changes and in my case anyway (85 hp Force)...jumped up down showing multiples of the actual RPM....eg; if at 3000 RPM it would show 9000, then 6000, then 1500, the 3000....drove me nuts....fwiw I would find a used Evidrude/Johnson compatible tach and use it instead.....and I might add the wires for the TINY TACH are way too short to get to the drivers seat...I had to mount mine on the transome facing forward, had to twist around backwards to see it....PIA!

and where you at?

I'm from Parrsboro, NS, family was displaced west like most!

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought that you said you could not use a regular tachometer. If you have a charging system for a battery on an electric start motor, you could add a regular tach.

If you do decide to consider a TinyTach, be sure and describe exactly what your plan is because the company is very specific about wire lengths and getting the right unit for each motor, you cannot splice in more wire, but they tell you that right up front and tell you to order the amount of wire that you need.

His model number indicates a rope start motor.

Re: Motor setup pics

Just for clarification....I do have a rope start motor. I also contacted tiny tach and this was their response "
You will need a modified 2C. Order the TT226R-2C
and in the "comments" box on the order page tell us
that you need the 2XLR for your outboard. If you need
more than the standard 6' cable, tell us that too.
Shipping by Global Priority Mail is $12-15.
Allow at least 2 weeks through Canadian customs.
Best regards,
Margie"........anyway in the meantime I was considering raising the motor up and checking with my gps for any speed diffferences, which I am assuming would indicate any changes in motor efficiency....is this a correct assumption...
