keel questions

can i sand my keel and add a 1/2 inch strip to it to make it deeper then glass over it? should i do it before i put my new transom on? and can i flip my boat over to do all this?

you better get that boat as stable as you can. before you start unnecessary stuff. get the upper repairs gone, then you can flip it, sand, add what you want to. glass and paint it. then flip it back and finish the upper part. and paint. the only way your are going to finish that boat is complete little task at a time. you can work on 15 different parts at the same time.

I think you CAN do it, but my question is WHY? What kind of boat is it anyway..?

Do the transom first, and other topside structural repairs. Don't flip the boat until you're sure that it won't bend or flex too much.

Anthony, you better sure, block,and brace that whole boat befor you start. Like Tashasdaddy said. or you will wind up with a pile of scrap wood. If you get that transom just a little off you are gonna have a bad day. Good luck:redface:

i'm not being mean, cruel, or even an *****hole. you have what looks to be, a old wooden, maybe even homemade boat, that was glassed. it has a lot of problems.

i like the lines of the old boat.

but you have to realize that the wood, did not grow in those bends, without bracing, and holding the good stuff in place, you are going to have, the equivent of a JACK IN THE BOX. you realease that wood, it's going to want to straighten out. what you end up with, will keep you warm this next winter. if you have a wood burner.

I agree with TD, but did not want to say it. Your boat needs lots of work. Ever think of looking for a fibreglass hull and putting your motor and stuff on it? It is quite common to find people who are giving away old hulls for free. It may be a more efficient use of your resources.

There's a sacrificial strip the length of the keel on my woodie. It's not glassed over though. Your hull looks to be a modified vee planing hull w/hard chines. With all those longitudinals its gotta be plywood(the best candidate to epoxy/glass over).

You could use ratchet straps to hold it in the original position while completing the repairs.

IMO trailers are the cause of many destroyed woodies. There are owners that believe the boat stands are to support the weight of the boat. The keel is the key.

So the cabin is Gone on your boat ? No worries about gelcoat.

Ah...the warmth of wood.

thanks for the advice TD now i understand i will procced with the transom and brace it. where and how do i brace it?

and the top cab is gone now i am unsure as what brand of boat it is think homemade . i dont want another boat hull beacause i wanted a project to do and its been in the family for 14years.

a couple of piece of wood across the top, and a couple of X braces. think of it as a SPRING, you want to keep compressed.
