Re: Carb help

I never had an black smoke coming out, and it almost seems as if it is fuel starved rather than giving a flooding problem. I guess the condenser would be next on the list. I know it was just replaced not to long ago, but I guess it could be bad...anything is possible. Is there a way to "bench test" it? I don't have a service manual unfortunately...but the help I'm getting here has been great!

Re: Carb help

One more question on top of my many...when I took the fuel filter out the other day I noticed that it said FRAM. I'm guessing the guy before me just went to the local Wal-mart and got a fuel filter that "matched". Is there a specific marine application that would differ from a car fuel filter. I would espext there to be some kind of difference. The filter does not look clogged, but I'm assuming that it just is not letting the correct amount of fuel flow through at higher RPM's.....

Re: Carb help

Hello,

1. Does your carb have an accelerator pump adjustment screw? On my boat, the throttle linkage was not triggering the accelerator pump lever to push up into the carb soon enough and it produced similar symptoms. I lengthened the spring to press on or "trigger" the accelerator pump lever sooner and it fixed the problem.

2. Back to the throttle place opening up fully, did you check that it opens fully when the engine is hot? If not, when you move the throttle plate, the small linkage that also moves and is connected to the choke's "fast idle cam" might be incorrectly placed (above or below the cam?) or even incorrectly bent, which could physically preventing it from opening regardless of temp.

As far as I can tell, no, it does not have it nor does it list it on my rebuild instructions. The only adjustment screws I have seen are the two idle adj. screws at the very bottom of the carb.

Yes, this is now working.

Re: Carb help

This isn't exactly scientific or safe but have you tried squirting gas directly into the carb throat to see if the RPM's can increase above 2000? I'd imagine there are also some adjustments to the spring for the float in the carb - was that all set correctly?

Re: Carb help

sounds like you need to flip the accelerator pump rod inside the carb around. If its installed backwards it will bind on the accelerator bore ad not allow full travel of the carb linkage. it connects by slipping in a hole in a piece of linkage inside on the top piece of the carb. if backwards just turn it around to connect from the opposite side of the linkage.

Re: Carb help

I had the same Stalling problem and kept thinks a dirty Fuel, Carb area problems. I replace the Fuel PUMP ( $90 bucks) at Orielly ( 250.00 at Mercruiser dealer. And Stalling is gone on Acceleration.

The only problem I am having now is HIgh Idling after Warmup I have to keep lowering the idle via the linkage screw.

Re: Carb help

Well, thanks for all the help and suggestions guys, but I found the problem finally today. Figure I should post the result here, in case someone else runs into this problem. I was going to remove the fuel/water sperator and go get a new one, when i figured I'd give the boat one last "basic" check over. i.e. plugs, wires, compression, oil, gas, spark..all those things...and of course one of the last things I just happen to notice...the wires from the condensor and the coil had come loose from their screw in the distributor. It was a matter of re-seating those wires and tightening the screw. I guess through time and some rough waters that must have backed itself out. Does this seem like a "normal" thing? I have yet to water test it, only tested in the driveway, but it fires right up, idles smooth, revs quick and responsively, no hesistation. Now to just get the updated water way stickers and I should be good to go for another year. Thanks again guys for all the help:)
