no idle---please help

I have been having the same problem since last year. The motor kinda starts OK but after warms up a little it won't idle. It seems to idle with just the motor muffler on it but not when put on the lake. A mechanic told me that if it will idle with the motor muffler and no in the lake then its probably the reeds. I ran motor with muffler at fast idle and couldn't feel any gas coming out in front of the carbs. All the plugs look the same but kinda like they have been burning rich. I don't mind spending a little money on reeds or whatever it needs but I sure would like to know that I going in the right direction. I have also noticed that the motor seems like its not really rapping out on top end. Kinda sluggish. ITs smooth as can be and lower unit is solid so its worth some fixing. If you have any ideas I would appreciate it.

what motor? when running of Muffs, there is not any backpressure on the exhaust. General rule it should idle around 850rpms on Muffs, so that it idles in the water, Where there is backpressure, 650 to 700 rmps, in gear. turn your idle stop screw up.

I did omit the engine size. Sorry Its a 1983 evinrude 75 hp. When I first put it in the water it will idle but after a short fast idle run and engine warms up thats when it starts to not idle. I have tries faster rpm but that dosen't seem to help

it sounds like the carbs may need cleaning or rebuilt.
it may also need to be de-carbed.
the FAQ has a pretty good article on de-carbing.
I would try de-carbing it first.
