My wife wants to get a dog. She is looking at little expensive things called "MaltiPoo". I read its a mixed breed.

Wife is looking to buy one off the internet.

Any suggestions on where to buy? What to look out for?

I don't have a clue.

Thanks,

Mark.

I would not buy a dog that I had not seen with it's mother. Period!
I have never heard of that breed so I can't help with what to look for.

A Maltipoo is a half Maltese, half Poodle mix-a designer dog. Make sure the breeder tests the parents for health issues (eyes, heart, hips, thyroid are standard if it is a good breeder).

Note to self: Ignorance is bliss. Go back and start worrying about all these threads. New boat probably has soggy floor, towing vehicle is probably too small, and the timing belt needs to be changed, and I'll probably forget the drain plug.

Any suggestions on... What to look out for?

I have one. Look out for an abandoned dog, one you could get from a shelter at minimal expense that needs a home. Then you can work fewer hours and reduce your stress level at work...

Puppies generally take on the temperment of their parents. High strung dogs produce high strung puppies. You want to make sure your puppy is not from a puppy mill and that the breeder is breeding dogs without temperment issues.

That said, Parvo is a long-lived virus that attacks and kills puppies and many breeders will not let you see the litter as to not introduce parvo (on your shoes) to thier kennels.

Search on line for references-

(we used to breed multigeneration labradoodles, a lab-poodle mix, but have ours fixed now)

Never mind. Wife just told me she decided she doesn't want anything that is a poodle mix.

Now where did I leave my stress pills? :D

Maltepoo, Cockerpoo, Pekapoo. All mongrels bred on purpose for elitists. Frankly, I don't think breeding two hyperdogs is likely to produce a good pet.

I agree with bjcsc. Go to the local shelter and look for a dog that was not "turned in" for bad behavior, but reluctantly surrendered by someone who loved it but cannot, for whatever reason, take care of it.

Excellent decision! BTW, and OT, I checked out your build site for your boat and you did a hellofa job. I especially liked how you cast the parts you needed after teaching it to yourself out of necessity. They really turned out great. Good show...

Forget the stress pills :D and "accidentally-on-purpose" stop by a local shelter and hope she falls in love with something she sees. It's hard for most people to walk out without a new friend...

You can't beat a heinz 57 dog as a pet. I have a registered Weimeriner and a rescued (and we think abused) Black Lab + Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. I love both my dogs but the Weim is a neurotic basket case with seperation anxiety when we're not home. The Lab is just happy to be here.

We took in a 3 yr. old chocolate lab who had been chained up inside a garage. He is absolutely the best dog I have ever had. He wants nothing more than to be with us. Every morning he wakes us by "talking". Every evening when we get home he acts like he's the happiest animal in the world.

I agree on the shelter trip. I did a project for the local shelter and if it had lasted another month we would be a 2 dog family. I still think they had the meetings in the back of the facility just so I had to walk past the dogs. It was very hard to not bring one home with me.

I'm with JB. Hybrid mutts with pedigree's for those who need a piece of paper to validate their relationship with their dog. Labridoodles are popular around here, 15 years ago they called them mutts.

Also, people turn in dogs cuz they are too hyper, only to find out the owner lived in a one bedroom apt, and had no idea where the dog park was. Dogs behave when exercised. People frequently buy dogs for all the wrong reasons. When 1001 dalmations, the movie came out, within a year the pound was full of them.

Re: MaltiPoo? This is a dog?

My wife and I wanted a dog after ours got poisioned. We got on petfinder and found ours. We drove a 300 mile trip into Michigan to a shelter to get him. Gotta admit it was love at first sight. He is 4 years old now, bout 180 pounds. Half Lab half Newfie.

We crate trained him and it was the first time for us using that method. It works! For the time we have had him, he has only had 3 accidents and that was in the basement. He was named Keeper by an iboats member (sorry I can't remember who it was).

I've heard that the Labradoodles are surpose to be hypoalergenic and don't shed. Cute dogs as well. Good luck,,,,,,,,,petfinder is a good source to look

Re: MaltiPoo? This is a dog?

Jenn and I are a Lab family. He is gentle, calm and thinks the world revolves around my wife. Our lab cooper (actually my wife's lab) can sense if one of us has had a bad day and shows extra affection.

My suggestion is to settle on a type of dog and one sizable enough to interact with your kids..... then look up the rescue for that breed.

So..... I put in my vote for a lab! ;)
