looking for info on old boat

I just bought a 1970 sea king 12' boat. I was told it was made by montgomery ward but other than that I know nothing about it. My husband would like to repaint it and seal it to make sure we don't have any leaks. If anyone has any information about these kinds of boats or how to repair/repaint/etc. that would be most helpful. Thanks!

Welcome to iboats. :)

Made FOR Wards. By who I don't know. Find any leaks before painting. Loose rivets can usually be snugged-up with someone hammering one side while somebody else holds an "anvil" on the other side. The "anvil" is usually just a larger hammer. Wear hearing and eye protection. You can spray paint or brush it on. Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Dawn dish soap works well for removing any residual oils before painting. A green ScotchBrite pad works well for roughing-up the surface. Just mix it up like you're washing dishes and scour with the pad. A healthy dose of vinegar in the wash water lightly etches the surface as well. Prime it first, then paint. You can get the special expensive stuff for aluminum, but most anything for metal works just fine. Speckled trunk paint looks nice inside.

I have a 1975 version of that same boat. Mine leaked from damage under the keel near the bow from when a barn fell on it but I hammered the rivets and now she leaks less. ;) I also repainted it but wish I hadn't because it's coming off now.

My boat was an ex-campground boat and runs okay with my 1955 Sea King 5 HP 2 cyl or my newer but not better Briggs 5 HP single cyl.

Sounds a little like golf club epoxy I used to patch a hole made from the same barn collapse. Still sealed nicely after several years. Thanks for the tip.

Gluvit is a flowing creeping epoxy sealant and I would think it might work on golfclubs but it costs $$$$ Google it. You should also look in the Restoration Section and search in there for tips.

imho, Gulvit is the aluminum boats best friend. did this little 14' 1960 lonestar a couple of years ago. set the boat on saw horses, blocks or something, then run the water hose in it up to the water line. watch for leaks. i sanded the outside with a vibrating sander, then use the cheap HomeDepot spray paint, i have no had any problems. use the same paint on the inside. washed with dawn before painting. no primer. also makes touch up really easy, if dock rash occurs. you have a good combination for boat and motor.
